Инженер. Начинал как геодезист, участвовал в строительстве ряда каналов. В 1842 построил подвесной мост близ Филадельфии, в 1847 подвесной мост через Ниагару ниже водопада, а в 1849 построил подвесной мост с крупнейшим пролетом - 330 м - через р. Огайо [Ohio River] в г. Уилинге, шт. Вирджиния, для железной дороги "Балтимор - Огайо" [Baltimore and Ohio Railroad]. Внес значительный вклад в разгром речного флота южан во время Гражданской войны [Civil War], построив речные тараны
